Not so. Two things happened starting in the 1980s that changed the global economy forever: the dawn of the world wide Web, and the financialization of everything. Both have multiplied real economic output. You can say people are profiting off of nothing and so the profit is nothing, but it's very real if it in turn finances real human activity.
