It really became a sales gimick in the 60s. More transistors = better.
You can make a decent pocket radio of this type with 5-6 transistors, but I've seen some claiming 15 or more. They are just dead parts stuffed on the board to make it look better.
In this radio I'm repairing, they have swapped out a single diode for a transistor just because they could.
It's quite funny to see parts just stuffed in to make up the numbers.
