To win, we had to stick together, me and my two neighbours. We needed help but thankfully there is a punk-turned-housing-lawyer here who gave us a lot of advice early on for very cheap. Once we needed a real lawyer to represent us, we found that there were numerous rad housing lawyers here. They are all overworked, and it does cost money to hire one, not a lot but an amount that can be prohibitive for a lot of poor people. But the amount of money we all saved by not having to move and pay higher rent for a year is nothing compared to what our legal fees are. And having a lawyer was essential. Most of the lawyers here will work on a combined case of neighbours, if they are all uniter and in solidarity together and split the rate between them, since most of the work is the same across everyone's cases.
