some old stuff was built well and it survives. we see the remaining old things and go - "why don't they build stuff that way anymore?"

reality is - most of the old stuff was demolished / destroyed / or was pure crap built with inferior tools (knowledge and otherwise). but you never see any of that because it's already gone.
side note: the process of building those old things was also less safe and more disruptive to the surrounding environment.

the things we are building today will last longer, be safer, etc etc, **on average**, than what was built in the past.

also, modern construction is far more optimized and precise which is less romantic than the epic surviving structure built by a sultan with effectively unlimited budget
