Maybe their world has naturally occurring glyphs, and their shape is evolved camouflage but also a cosmic plagiarism; maybe they're something else, but got conscripted to be a script; maybe it's a kind of votive code-splay.

In my unfinished game about fungi combat, I've considered a mechanic that grants players abilities if the cavities in their shapes match specific silhouettes
