managed to determine that the "unused" dongle (and the software bridge that it was a member of) was not in fact unused, which is why all my services are broken this time
like I said... can't rely on my own brain due to the endless sensory overload
anyway, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about this problem, since 2.5GbE dongles are problematic (but why did it work before???) and apparently so is the 1GbE one
