Been thinking of switching to #pixel with #grapheneos for at least a year before the current #apple and #damus happening. The biggest exit cost for me is loss of convenience and having to give up many daily used and accepted privacy-violating features and/or finding open source alternatives to most other features. What I’m pondering about how to replace/say goodbye to the hardest:

- AirDrop: generate a file, let’s say a pdf export of data within a specialized app and quickly send to computer for viewing/editing without having to put it online or on other storage media to do a lengthy transfer

- AirTag: in my suitcase which looks identical to other hundreds of suitcases of my colleagues and helps me locate it swiftly and gtfo after work or prove it’s not lost/where someone else claims it is.

- Find My: phone will not be recoverable or wipeable, everything needs to be backed up ideally offline and also to prevent being locked out of 2FA services using the phone as main authenticator. Also relying on Pixel being inaccessible to finder/attacker with stored data.

- iCloud Photos: having instant backup and unified photo gallery, and sharing among family. Not using it again provides better privacy but makes me imagine it will be a lot of lower quality picture and video forwarding through Signal and having to make constant offline backups or Proton Drive dumps.

- iCloud Mail: have custom domain so can easily use Proton Mail only, but have been extensively using the Hide My Email feature for privacy and it’s speed in creating and disabling addresses coming to single account is unlikely to be matched.

- iCloud Files: I am using the scan document feature daily to quickly scan to PDF and have it in a temporary folder before processing on desktop and filing for storage on Proton Drive later. Wouldn’t want to use Adobe Cloud instead and having it offline is again inconvenient and an extra step.
