2-photon microscopy works by the simultaneous absorption of 2 far-red/infrared quanta, right? Is there any practical limit to N-photon microscopy — that is, a cell could survive a huge amount of long-wavelength EM waves focused on one spot, and by absorbing e.g. 5? 10? quanta at the same time a fluorophore could be activated? My guess is no, anything more than a few photons would involve lethal levels of infrared etc. heating up the cell.
