The main thing is that - with the right gear and the movements of shift, tilt and swing - we have the ability to get the film/sensor plane and lens plane off the perpendicular. This brings plane of focus in to play. Not just depth of focus. A 45degree down angle, like here from the high bridge, and the right movements of the camera conspire to produce this miniature effect. It's a lot of fun to work with.
