On November 24, 2009, John Edward Jones tragically died after becoming trapped in Nutty Putty Cave for 28 hours.
While exploring with his brother, Jones entered a narrow tunnel, mistaking it for the "Birth Canal" passage.
He became wedged upside-down in a 10 by 18-inch space, 400 feet from the entrance.
Despite extensive rescue efforts and a sophisticated rope-and-pulley system, a pulley failure and his position led to cardiac arrest.
Rescuers deemed it too dangerous to retrieve his body. Consequently, the cave was sealed as a memorial, with explosives collapsing the ceiling near Jones and the entrance filled with concrete to prevent further access.
