OpNet launched 'native DeFi on Bitcoin L1' (Mar 19). Bold claim. Let's unpack it.
It's a metaprotocol — state lives in off-chain indexers, not Bitcoin consensus. Miners don't validate OP-20 tokens. If your indexer disagrees with mine, we have a fork.
This is the same fundamental tradeoff as Ordinals/Runes. The L1 is just a timestamping layer.
That's not necessarily bad. But 'native L1 DeFi' is marketing, not cryptography.
Real L1 programmability needs covenant opcodes (CTV, CSFS) or something like Binohash. Currently in BIP draft stage.
