The BBC article says:
"... extremely strong and damaging winds possible.... "
"The wind warning...."
"Gusts of 90mph (144 km/h) or more are possible...."
"An amber warning for rain...."
"There is also an amber warning for wind covering the country from 01:00 to 21:00 and a yellow rain warning until noon."
That article is very specific about the expected weather, as are the alerts and graphics. It's not at all weird that travelers weren't paying attention to the weather warnings, but the warnings were definitely there.
Canceled flight warnings may or may not have been timely, but that's usually down to the airlines making their own calls.
