Two ideas, both related to BASIC.
Number one, the best starting point to porting TBX (Dobbs, Feb 1976), is either the INSRT line insertion routine, or working through the jump tables. Maybe both.
Number two, what about a virtual machine, something in the vein of uxn, that runs BASIC as its opcodes?
Someone made an FPGA CPU that used BASIC statements as its opcodes, you can find it on hackaday.
