it's a bad design that results in a single popular post being able to cripple smaller web servers, and it's easily fixed: include the preview in the original post so it only has to be queried once. https://mastodon.social/@hyc/111178941734994879
wouldn't it be cool if all that metadata were collected *once*, at the time the poster submits their post, and it traveled along with the post to every server that receives it? Could also have a freshness TTL, to let other servers decide if they should try to pull newer metadata or not, but biased toward "not".
