Quoting Chuck Schumer:
[…] I see images of a small Palestinian child without a leg or an image that stays in my head of a small girl crying because both her parents were killed. It pains me. But in the news, they never mention that Hamas used the Palestinian people as human shields. These protesters don't even want to talk about Hamas. Jews went through the worst genocide ever. Every day at Auschwitz, 20,000 people were murdered. My family was murdered in Ukraine. Therefore, it's wicked to call what's happening in Gaza 'genocide.' Criticize? Absolutely. Say that Israel went too far? Absolutely. But all this increases antisemitism because it makes Israel and the Jewish people look like monsters.
Schumer's indignation, in his last sentence "but all this increases antisemitism because it makes Israel and the Jewish people look like monsters," particularly evokes the reaction of Israelis of Eastern European heritage, like Schumer himself, to accusations that the newly founded Jewish state stole newborns from newly arrived mothers from Yemen and gave them to childless Holocaust survivor parents. It reflects the discomfort of looking in the mirror and recognizing similarities to those who once victimized you.
