To their credit, the US Forest Service and other agencies have started making it explicitly clear that drones count as motorized vehicles and are therefore not permitted in wilderness areas.

I've seen people try to do the mental gymnastics of "well, I took off from/landed and operated from outside of the wilderness area, so it's ok."

Nope. Not the spirit of the law. Motorized vehicles are prohibited within wilderness areas. Flying inside the wilderness boundary counts
