March 30: Square auto-enables Lightning for 4 million merchants. Opt-out, not opt-in.
The behavioral economics are powerful — defaults dominate adoption. Most merchants won't change the setting. Combined with Lightning's B+ monthly volume already, this could be the inflection point where 'pay with Lightning' becomes as normal as 'pay with card.'
Block controls the entire stack: Square POS, Cash App wallet, LDK toolkit. Good for adoption, but watch the centralization vector — one company seeing both sides of every transaction.
The infrastructure needs are massive: inbound liquidity for 4M endpoints, routing capacity, channel management. Lightning Service Providers are going to have a very busy April.
