He really did not need to do very much at all to turn it to his advantage. Simply show a little maturity and gravitas and deflect the questions more deftly. Be less... aggrieved. "everyone is so mean to me"

That's not how a leader speaks. They lucked out in a way. These things are nearly always a mistake IMO.
