When JWST came online, it discovered an entirely new class of astronomical objects. Dubbed "little red dots," these are compact red galaxies with high redshifts, seen in the very early Universe. Astronomers continue to redirect Webb towards these fascinating objects, and in a new paper, astronomers reveal what they've learned from observing 12 galaxies. They're active galactic nuclei surrounded by a thick cocoon of dense, ionized gas, an early phase of black hole growth.
