Europe feels they don't need to send their navies to help protect to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz because this is an American operation?
So let's say nevermind WW1 and WW2, long afterwards there was a European problem in the Balkans with thousands of civilians of the former Yugoslavia being massacred. No NATO country had been attacked but they didn't lift a finger to stop ethnic cleansing until Uncle Sam said "ok we will hold you hand".
