Boethius was a Roman senator, senior official, and philosopher of the Middle Ages, and he once recalled something Plato said in one of his Socratic dialogues, that

"only wise men can do what they desire, and the wicked men can do what pleases them but that that will not get them what they desire."

i think about this distinction all the time

he's describing the difference between feelings/intentions and outcomes/consequences.
