The explanation I got is that water itself is such a powerful solvent that if you drink distilled water it will tend to dissolve your insides. (Not instantly, of course.) Tap water doesn't do this (it was claimed) because it is already at its saturation limit for solutes.
The question I really want answered is: is it safe to drink deuterium oxide?
