In January 2026 imports of #Russia LNG reached a record 2.276 billion cubic meters with key importers being #France #Spain and #Belgium. In total this makes only 18% of overall LNG imports into EU but it’s still embarrassing that the above EU Member States directly support Russia military budget by their purchases.
As many media especially in the US love to speak of “EU imports”, that’s quite opposite of the truth - energy policy of individual member states is explicitly excluded from EU competences, which is why they can make these purchases on their own and actively block sanctions that would prevent these imports. It’s not “EU imports”, it’s literally France, Spain and Belgium importers bypassing EU in order to support Russian budget.
