A canvas provides spatial anchors. So the brain doesn’t have to hold everything in working memory. The environment becomes part of the thinking process.
Prompting requires you to keep the design in your head. Working memory has limits.
So prompting can feel like: Describing a sculpture without touching clay, composing music without an instrument. You operate in description space, not manipulation space
