It's hard for me to express optimism about the #FSF's Librephone project. It strikes me like they're tackling the wrong end of the problem.

They have a complete FLOSS distro of Android under the GNU project already, called Replicant. It's basically stalled out because no modern phones meet it's freedom requirements.

AND any attempts by this Librephone project to reverse engineer all of the proprietary bits out of a modern phone, such that you could begin a modern Replicant.... will only be good for as long as that one single model of phone stays relevant?

I can't help but feel like the FSF's total lack of interest in open hardware has painted them into a corner on this one. #floss #smartphone #android
