I agree that the rivalries seem fake, especially with China:
1. If the US and China were truly enemies, the US wouldn't allow 250,000 Chinese to study in the US every year. That's a lot of potential spies.
2. Similarly, I have a friend who works at the top science and engineering university in Japan. She said there are SO MANY Chinese students, especially at the masters/phd level. Why on earth would Japan be sharing high level scientific knowledge and training with Chinese students if China were really their enemy?
3. If the US and China were truly rivals, wouldn't China cut the US off from all rare earths and weapons parts? I mean why sell weapons parts to your enemy??? It's ridiculous.
