My observation about why folks on either side seem to be triggered by this topic is the concept of priors. There always seems to be a set of previously accepted ideas that have been sifted and vetted as part of a sense making process. Most of the Christian world is built on systematic theologies that require threads of consistency to make their systems work. There are flavours of course, but there are general similarities between them. As science and philosophy progresses, priors and therefore systems of belief can sometimes be challenged. That can be triggering because it’s interpreted as an attack. People can end up trying to defend the bigger system rather than deal honestly with unexamined priors. The whole thing gets uncomfortable pretty quick if not done in an environment that fosters the relationship over the belief system.
