yeah, the further away your elbows are from your ribs, the higher risk you have of damaging your shoulders.

Also, this needs to be said, proper position will have you pinning your shoulders back, squeezing your shoulder blades together, and pushing your chest up. This removes most of the load off your front delts and puts the majority of the work onto the pecs.
