it seems to me that these two things are uncontroversial and have never changed:
1. audio is easier to produce than video (per minute)
2. people have more audio-listening-friendly minutes in their day than video-watching-friendly minutes
this bodes well for audio
so it's hard for me when I read these studies to understand where people are getting all of this time in their lives to watch two people talking
