The problem with silent payments (and similar), is that once spent the spender groups the outputs together, thus linking them. It's still an improvement, but far from what privacy advocates actually desire.
I don't believe "private Bitcoin" can truly ever work. I don't understand why Monero is viewed as a competitor instead of a compliment.
