About 40 % of buoyant ocean plastic is hidden in the depths.
A 2023 Nature Geoscience study by Kaandorp et al. used surface, deep-water and beach data in a 3D model (particles 0.1–1,600 mm). 2020 picture: •Total mass ≈ 3,200 kilotonnes •95 % is large debris (>25 mm) •~60 % at the surface, ~37 % deeper, ~2 % on beaches •Annual input ≈ 500 kilotonnes
These plastics stick around longer than once thought, and the total keeps growing.
