INKTOBER 2026 DAY 4: CACTUS
ON KEEPING A CAT
She slumbers hours into a dreamy past
awakened but to stretch her legs and claws
before she curls again and tucks her paws
beneath her fuzzy chest. Some nights, aghast,
she gazes into voids in corners passed
without a thought before. She ponders flaws
in food she crunches in her jagged jaws
and lolls bored by the toys she has amassed.
This fuzzy cactus hails my late return
by sniffing at my hand and smearing it
with oil before descending from her stern
and lofty tower to beg for food with fit
and caterwaul. But when she nestles near
it warms my heart to quell her every fear.
