My mom was a primary school teacher in the latter half of the last century. During book-banning debates at her school system in the 1980s — over Dungeons & Dragons themed books, of course; Satanic Panic was in full swing — a speaker who’d been brought in by the banning side said that schools shouldn’t be allowed to teach critical thinking skills because if you needed a thought, God would give it to you. There was much agreement from the audience, she said.
I think about that a lot these days.
