MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East on Saturday, the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) said.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck Kamchatka, originating 6 kilometers deep and located 108 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Following this, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred 116 kilometers away. The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning, indicating a potential tsunami threat on the coast, with waves possibly reaching 0.3m-1m above tide level in certain Russian coastal areas. Kamchatka's history includes recent seismic and volcanic events, such as the eruption of Bezymianny Volcano last month.
