I know I'm probably expecting too much of people to maintain a bit of collegiality, given that it only takes one person being an ass to ruin things. But it's a standard I try to hold myself to and I think social media would be better if we collectively decided to chill out a little bit.
I think it's worse on the fediverse because there's a higher percentage of people who are disaffected with other social media for either censoring too much or too little (in their views), and both of those groups are primed to fight instead of make peace for better or worse.
I looked into your blog about setting up and running an instance and asked Hoss a little bit about it after the rdrama instance went down, and after a few days of thinking about it I decided that there's just too many people forming grudges over anything to make it worth running one. There's way too many vindictive people to make it seem worth the risk of registering a domain in something eventually traceable back to my real name when anyone can for whatever reason try to get me fired or harass my family. I don't even really post controversial opinions here, but I still have that uncertainty.
Shout out to everyone who does bother to operate instances, because you're braver people than me. However, I do think it would be worth considering being a little more charitable when it comes to other people, given that admins/operators/owners are the lynchpins of the network. Federation is voluntary and without federation we're all just on our own little islands talking to not too many people.
I'm now being told that this is a fake Churchill quote, but I think the sentiment is good "To Jaw-Jaw is better than to War-War." In the same vein, to type-type is better than to block-block. (I know I'm preaching to the choir, but it's therapeutic to type things out sometimes).
