Roles don't have any functionality yet, they're entirely cosmetic. But it would not be hard to make roles give people powers, depending on the relay's internal policy. So for example, a moderator role could allow nip 86 deleteevent to show up in supportedmethods. This is great because the introspection is already there. I think it sounds very scary to come up with a protocol for defining what roles are able to do, because it would become an absolute tarpit (like the minimal nip29 room permissions already are).
