Magic is just a shorthand for, "I'm too stupid and lazy to figure out out. I'll blame the supernatural to avoid facing my own stupidity and laziness."
The devil is just the same shorthand applied to human evil instead of benign visual tricks.
By declaring yourself too powerless, a mere mortal with a supernatural enemy, you voluntarily give basic human evil the gift of never trying to interfere.
