New York’s FY 2027 budget law mandates surveillance software in every 3D printer sold in the state. The software must scan each print job in real time and block any that could produce firearm components. Pilot tests flagged 17% of innocent designs such as brackets and bottle openers.

The law also makes it a Class E felony to possess or share a 3D-printable file capable of producing a firearm component.
