🇦🇪 UAE-owned English 🇬🇧 football club Manchester City have been found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations ⚽
Covering a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018, the ruling exposes a decade of illicit financial manipulation since UAE vice-president Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed took ownership of the club in 2008.
City have won 20 major trophies in the Sheikh Mansour era, with six of them coming since the charges were brought.
While the club is expected to appeal, potential punishments range from record fines to retrospective points deductions and expulsion.
The ruling is the latest in a list of controversies surrounding City’s Emirati owners.
In 2020, EU European football’s governing body, UEFA, banned the club from its competitions for two years over financial irregularities. Although the ban was overturned on appeal, City still had to pay an £8.8m fine.
In 2023, English referee Michael Oliver was reportedly paid £20,000 by a company linked to Manchester City’s owners to officiate matches in the UAE.
In September 2025, City reached a settlement with the Premier League over a dispute regarding the latter’s sponsorship rules.
Moreover, Manchester City’s Emirati owners are also implicated in fueling devastation and resource extraction in the Global South. 💰
Human rights organisation FairSquare called on the 🇬🇧 UK government to sanction Sheikh Mansour over his alleged direct role in bankrolling atrocities perpetrated in Sudan 🇸🇩 by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.
In October 2025, the RSF carried out mass genocidal in the city of Al-Fashir estimated to have k*lled at least 60,000 people, prompting protests outside of City’s stadium.
According to New York Times investigations, the CIA intercepted calls showing Mansour directly coordinating with the RSF’s commander, with “hospitals” established by the Manchester City owner’s “charities” reportedly serving as cover for smuggling weapons to the militia.
