soon after the earth’s crust solidified, around 4 billion years ago, it probably did look much like the moon does today. The moon is a “frozen in time” record of that because it never had plate tectonics or atmospheric weathering. And the moon retained the record of everything that has hit it since, though the frequency and size of the bombardment decreased with time as the much of the inner solar system’s loose bits were “swept clean” by the gravity fields of planets & moons.
