Oh! I've just thought of an experience like yours:
When I was studying Japanese, I learned that the word for Mediterranean was 地中海 (pronounced Chichūkai). The characters literally translate as Earth Middle Sea.
It had never occurred to me that that's what Medi-Terran-Ean (Sea) had meant all along -- and then it was right there staring at me!
