Mastodon is not named after the Oligocene mammoth ancestor.
Actually, its original creator, James Donald (nickname "Don") wanted to create a microblogging site, and envisioned something akin to a ship's Mast hoisting semaphore flags for all to see.
So he called the software "Mast'o'Don". (Mast of Donald). And then took out the punctuation.
Resulting in what we know today as Mastodon.
