Finally got the scene capture based icon renders for hats, robes and beards working correctly for the character customisation screen. The awkward points being:

1. Getting textures streamed in before the capture
2. Fast-forwarding the mesh simulation a bit so that e.g. moustaches and hats that are simulated droop into their "rest" positions before capture - in the bind pose they're sticking straight out!
3. Switching anim blueprints because not all hats / beards use the same dynamics setup
