My grandma called them "Conniption Bugs" because when you see one you have a conniption fit as they are rather large and astonishing, but in the end harmless.

Seeing a dobsonfly is good luck because it means the fresh water streams and lakes are clean enough to support the hellgrammite who are the most cute and evil-looking larvae of any insect.
