Saudi Arabia needs investment and rapid (impossibly so) education of skilled youth. It lacks both and is therefore now faltering.

So it retreats into appeasing those it most fears can destabilize it: the Muslim Brotherhood and their mentors in Ankara and Doha, as well as the haunting specter from Damascus.

But it is a death spiral. It will drive investment away and leave its youth more radicalized and uneducated.

Moreover, it has no path for recovery. It wasted a critical 7 years playing hard to get — a rather arrogant overestimation of its solidity and indispensability — when it needed to expeditiously join the Abraham Accords and aggressively transform itself not with grandiose projects but with nitty-gritty education, business and industrial incentives.
