The "Moar Democracy" response to a failing state, reminds me of the medieval peasant revolts. The local nobles were obviously corrupt and self-serving and could care less about the peasants. So the peasants marched to the castle to demand the King do something about his bad nobles.
They could see that the system was corrupt, but they still believed the King MUST be good and was just unaware.
Too many people today have the same blind faith in 51%.
