I can't take the step to anarchism, because I can't imagine it being better after seeing the worst side of people so much in my life. Maybe I just don't fully understand. That's part of why I have followed quite a few anarchists. I keep hoping someone can fill in the blanks for me.
In my mind, if we ever got rid of government, people would just form gangs and mobs spontaneously, and some mob boss would work to acquire more and more power until we were back to square one. Better to intentionally form a government that at least *kind of* tries to respect the people's will as it slides into despotism than let it happen unintentionally and end up with the worst kind of despot right from the start.
The unanswered question that stops me from being an anarchist is this: Why wouldn't the power vacuum be filled? What's to stop that one cold-hearted narcissistic shitbag from starting it all over? Don't we see this over and over in schoolyard bullies?
