I just want to "yes, and" the INSANITY of Forester claiming that bicycle infrastructure should be aimed at people going 30 mph on a bike.
The venerable Bike Calculator (http://www.bikecalculator.com/) is a tool you can use to figure out how much power you need to move a given weight at a given speed up a given incline.
On a flat surface for an average weight rider, to sustain 30 mph you're looking at OVER 600 WATTS. That's a ludicrous amount of sustained power.
