as much as I'm married to the Python way - ostensibly the goal is for people with little programming experience to be able to glue some code together without the hassle of lower level languages - it feels like the right (Linux) answer is to build a framebuffer driver and let it handle the implementation details of whatever you're displaying. The result would be language agnostic.
Or C drivers + MicroPython glue code on embedded.
