"if you’d been in Germany in the 30s what would you have done” is a question that is really about your neighbors, not yourself except at a personal planning level. (I planned to run. I got too old to.)
My assumptions about my neighbors have turned out to be pretty much correct. Minnesotans are generally good but most people suck. I don't see what's to be gained by pretending otherwise. Mostly people say you should pretend otherwise so you can manipulate people.
